Leading the way for green hotels in Redondo Beach, CA, Crowne Plaza is pleased to announce the launch of our comprehensive sustainability program.
Our Redondo Beach hotel takes pride in providing great service to our guests, and we take this same approach as caring stewards of our environment. Designed to reduce our carbon footprint and lessen the impact on precious natural resources, our green lodging initiative encompasses all aspects of hotel operations, from food and beverage services to conference practices.
We encourage guests to participate in our ongoing efforts as we work to ensure that future generations of guests will have the same opportunity to experience the natural beauty of our scenic oceanfront destination.
Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach and Marina hotel's extensive Going Green program includes:
Recycling:
- All newspapers throughout the hotel (including guest rooms) taken to a designated recycling bin and recycled.
- All cardboard collected and recycled. Additional products, including metal and aluminum cans, glass bottles, kitchen grease, and paper products are recycled.
- Products in the hotel offices, including computer paper, copier paper, newsprint, and aluminum cans, are recycled. Each office area has its own recycling blue bin.
- Aluminum, plastic, and paper recycling bins placed at all major common break areas for groups.
- All toner cartridges are recycled.
- All old electronic equipment is disposed of properly instead of going to the landfill.
- Less paper used at check in /check out and in restaurant.
- In room coffee: vendor is in process of developing ‘green’ packaging and easily recyclable materials. Cups and coffee pods will be bigger to eliminate the need to brew and use 2 cups.
- Copy paper recycling – single side copy paper is re-used when possible for all internal reports. Double sided copying is implemented whenever appropriate.
Energy & Water Conservation:
- All light bulbs in guest rooms changed to CFL (compact fluorescent light).
- All fluorescent tubes are recycled.
- Guests are encouraged to conserve water and energy by participating in a linen reuse program. Details are made available on tent cards placed in every room. This is a company-wide program called “Conserving for Tomorrow”.
- Housekeeping changes linens every two days unless the guest requests otherwise. This is a company-wide program called “Conserving for Tomorrow”.
- Guestroom HVAC units are controlled by an energy management system. Motion detectors and balcony door switches shut down units when the guestroom is unoccupied or the balcony door is open. Low temperature settings are also programmed into the system for all guestrooms.
- Low-flow shower heads are installed in all guest bathrooms.
- New Green Laundry Program (initiated by laundry vendor) creates environmentally progressive initiatives designed specifically for the hospitality industry by developing a new laundry facility dedicated to specific Green Program goals.
- Pool and spa heaters and domestic water boilers are high efficiency and low NOX.
Conference Practices- The Place to Meet is Greener
- Meeting rooms and common areas are kept at an appropriate temperature for the season and for casual summer dress. All functions are programmed into a central energy management system, indicating start/stop time of functions and low/high temperature limits.
- Recycling bins made available for each group’s use.
- Crowne Meetings Director discusses how each planner may use more sustainable practices in their meeting, such as eliminating individual water bottles.

Food and Beverage Practices
- Availability of paper, plastic, or Styrofoam is very limited and used only on request in both front and back of house. Utilize ceramic/glass items for all conference attendees.
- Vegetarian options are provided upon request at every meal. Healthy options are also provided upon request of meeting planner.
- Pitchers of water/juice are made available instead of individual plastic bottles unless requested otherwise.
- Milk and/or creamers in bulk are made available for coffee and tea.
- Cooking oil is recycled.
- All liquor bottles are recycled.
- Grease trap is maintained to minimize amount of grease that enters the local sewer system and comply with local FOG program.
Training
- Departments are trained in green practices supported by hotel and IHG- our corporate structure.
Transportation
- Employee “Ride Share” program subsidizes carpooling (preferred parking spaces assigned) and use of public transportation.
- Publish public transportation options on website and direction sheets
- Hotel successfully lobbied for bus stops directly across from and within easy walking distance to us.
- Our Sales and Guest Services Teams encourage all guests to rent a bike from us instead of using their car for local activities.
